Harry Reid Online Poker Legalization

Finally some more online poker news worth posting. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is pushing for new legislation for legalizing online poker behind the scenes. Though it would restrict initial licenses to offshore casinos and racetrack operators for at least two years, it would give Nevada casino operators a piece of the pie that currently generates an estimated $5 billion a year for offshore operators.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's staff has been circulating a bill that would legalize online poker, but only "existing casinos, horse tracks and slot-machine makers" would be able to do so for the first two years after passage.

Of course, as is expected, several republicans are making it clear they oppose any attempt to legalize internet gambling during the current legislative session, they say the senate is attaching the measure to legislation that must be passed during the current lame-duck session, which concludes on December 17.
